A new visa pathway for parents, and grandparents that wish to visit their families in Australia.
Late last year, the Migration Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2016 passed by the Federal Senate. This new Bill includes the introduction of a five-year sponsored temporary visa for the parents, and grandparents of migrants in 2019.
This new visa comes after many years of pressure from migrant communities who have demanded the Australian Government to provide overseas parents with better visa options.
These new temporary visas allow the parents of migrants to live in Australia for up to 10 years and will have two streams:
- 5-year visa ($10,000)
- 3-year visa ($5,000)
There will be an opportunity for applicants to renew their visa for another three or five years respectively, for the same price.
What are the new Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa applicant requirements?
- Sponsorship by the child must be approved
- Will not be required to take the Balance of Family test
- Only available to 1 set of parents at a time
- Will not be able to work in Australia during visa time period
- Can volunteer, or take care of grandchildren during visa time period
- Must have their own private health insurance while in Australia
- Will need to pass health, identity and character requirements of the visa
What are the requirements of the sponsoring child?
- Must be an Australian Citizen, or an eligible New Zealand Citizen
- Lived in Australia for at least four years before applying for the visa (exceptions apply)
- Pass the household income test (to be decided)
- Criminal record checks apply
There will be further information on the requirements of both the sponsoring child and the visa applicant, once the Bill is passed through Parliament later in the year.
